Product Description

It's Easier to Dance is the remarkable memoir from author Annie L. Harris, a woman born in the late 1940s with cerebral palsy. This extraordinary book is the first of its kind to provide a chronological view of the historical development of the civil rights movement through three different lenses: those of a woman, a minority, and someone living with a developmental disability. This insightful and unflinching account of Harris's life over the past sixty years reveals not only her heartache and pain but also her hope and triumph.Chapters such as “Ticket to Freedom,” “A Change in Identity,” and “My Life’s Rhythm” reveal a complex woman who has lived a life in defiance of ongoing social stereotypes and barriers. Told in a warm, candid, conversational style, Harris offers a compelling window into a world rarely seen as she uncompromisingly tackles issues of equity, education, sex, relationships, kindness, belief in the supernatural, and the power of love.In the vein of inspirational works by Helen Keller, Maya Angelou, and Oprah Winfrey, Harris's absorbing story encourages us all to look past our physical trappings, speak in our own voice, and believe those who speak for themselves.

Although we're making headway in our society now, being a female is still a disadvantage in various contexts and especially in certain countries. We've all heard or read so many stories about racial discrimination. And, if things are already difficult for everyone in our highly competitive world of work, it's but normal to expect that there'll be more odds that those with disabilities could possibly face. What if the three challenges become one's reality? How would one cope? What would one do?A daughter to African-American parents, Annie L Harris was already declared dead after birth. Born with cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that stunts physical and intellectual growth and development, she lived but wasn't expected to last long. However, she wasn't someone who's easily restricted by such boundaries. Easier to Dance - Living Beyond Boundaries shows how she traversed all of the above circumstances and how she mustered much determination to defy stereotypes, biases or expectations. On the downside, I would have already been put off by the various errors all throughout the piece. Capitalisations, missing words, punctuations, spacing between words and paragraphs, misspelt words, and so forth were too many even on the first few pages alone. However, the fact that Annie's husband painstakingly took the time to edit her manuscript moved me. Also, another run of professional editing could easily resolve those. Plus, the work has too many redeeming qualities for it to be disregarded. The writing style was simple and easily understandable, for one. Such downplayed possible confusion from the editing lapses. It's a short read, but it's packed with stoically told anecdotes interspersed with details on the milestones, achievements, and insights she had along the way. The primary storyline of adversity turned into positivity enthralled me. Her mum's staunch stance to make her live even made me remember the predilections my family had for my own precarious birth. Although Annie had extraordinary circumstances, her candid take on things made perfect sense and the dilemmas she went through were relatable. Her resilience and faith, despite it all, inspired me. The countless souls she would affect and help could readily put my own hesitations and inhibitions to shame. Her words of wisdom are sturdy anchors to hold on to.Originally published in 2010, I can't give this 2017 revised piece a perfect rating because of the technical flaws. However, it's an endearing memoir that I'd truly remember especially if times are at their roughest.Note: I purchased this book for $0.00, but I wasn’t required or requested to write the review.
