Chronicles the development of Western ballet focusing on the social and cultural forces which influenced the dancer's art
This history goes back to ancient times, the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and in fact told me much more than I wanted to know about the dim past. I was interested in classical ballet, which the author of course covers. But the book stops in 1942 after barely just mentioning George Balanchine, and does not cover the birth of New York City Ballet or its history. A word of warning: the text is set in extremely small type, so small that it was hard for me to read. But it's chock full of information about the periods and types of dance in does cover, almost more than a single person could possibly know.
