Product Description

How does one measure the depth of a mother's love? Pattie never thought it possible until she experienced every mother's worst nightmare--twice.With all three kids in college and thriving, Pattie is excited about embarking on her new career as community relations manager at Barnes & Noble. That is, until she receives word that her nineteen-year-old son has been admitted to the Medical University of South Carolina and tagged 'John Doe' after he suffered a traumatic brain injury. Now her sole concern is to get to Charleston, 250 miles away, before he takes his final breath. Although Casey is given only twenty-four hours to live, Pattie clings to her faith and refuses to accept his death sentence. During Casey's long and arduous healing, Pattie takes a hard look at the past--the kids' tender childhood memories, their challenging teenage years, the skeletons in the closet, and the circumstances that have formed her into who she has become. When tragedy strikes again, Pattie must make a choice--to remain stuck in her grief or to step into the life she's meant to create.Moving and heart-wrenching, A Mother's Dance is an inspirational story about family relationships, hope, perseverance, self-discovery, hard choices, and most importantly about love...the sad and the wondrous.I wrote this book in hopes it would bring healing to others, Hall says. Instead, I discovered that I was the one who healed."2016 Best Book Award" finalist.

It is impossible for me to fully convey how much A MOTHER'S DANCE by Pattie Welek Hall has meant to me as a mother working to guide teenagers to adulthood. I purchased this two weeks ago and sat right down to read it in one satisfying night full of laughter and tears.Hall is so natural a writer that one often forgets they are even holding a book while reading this story--it is that absorbing--and you simply get ensorcelled by the story she tells. She is especially adept at building momentum towards the tragedies we know are coming; she tells her autobiographical story with such humanity and compassion for her readers that one finishes the book feeling encouraged, not down-trodden. Her ability to write such an objective overview of the important take-aways of her tale that it is surprising to me, actually, that a larger press hasn't picked up this memoir to reprint it for a wider readership among lovers of Anne Lamott, Brene Brown and Elizabeth Gilbert, all of whose writing Hall could be compared with quite favorably. Most of all, however, I found it noteworthy that Hall employs a novelists toolkit of talents to tell a story that is clearly dear to her heart. Instead of being immobilized by the tragedies she has experienced in her family, as a mother, it is encouraging to see that she has ultimately triumphed, and will continue to do so as long as she can reach more readers, one "dance-step" at a time. Highly recommended for all library collections, as well as a book club choice for mothers of teens, as well as grief support groups and church book circles.
